Today I was reminded of one of the reasons I care so much about strength training that has absolutely nothing to do with aesthetics. I ended up helping someone after a fall and waiting with his family until EMS arrived. And it got me thinking about bone health. We talk a lot about lifting weights because we want to feel stronger, build muscle, change our body composition, or keep up with our kids. But resistance training is also one of the things we can do throughout our lives to support our bones. We don't control everything. You can do all the “right” things and still get hurt, get sick, or experience changes in your health as you age. But that doesn't make the things we can influence meaningless. Muscle matters. Bone health matters. Balance matters. The ability to get yourself off the floor matters. And I don't want us waiting until we're older to suddenly start caring about any of those things. This is a huge part of what I mean when I talk about training for real life. I'm not training just for what my body can do today. I'm putting deposits into the body I hope carries me through the next 30, 40, 50+ years. And that's what I want for my clients, too. I don't care about running you into the ground for the sake of saying you had a “good workout.” I want to help you build strength you can actually use, and keep building it for a very long time. If you've been wanting to get stronger but don't know what to do when you walk into the gym, that's exactly what my online coaching is for. YOUR TRAINER IN YOUR BACK POCKETIndividualized workouts.
